Our Junior Champion Club event was played yesterday (Mon 8 Apr) at Harpenden Common GC, where a full complement of 72 players took part, competing in both team and individual events on the day.

After such a wet Winter and early Spring, thankfully the preceding weekend was dry, warm and very windy, which allowed the course to significantly dry out, with conditions on the day being thankfully benign and very playable.

In the Boys Spring Meeting the best score was returned by Aaron Gould of Knebworth with an excellent 41 points from a Playing Handicap on the day of 8. Aaron would win the new Knights Chalice trophy, donated by Hertfordshire Golf Honorary Member Mark Knight, by 1 point from nearest competitor Marcus Karim of East Herts with 40 points from his PH of 9.

In the Girls Spring Meeting the best score was returned by Amelia Parker of Letchworth with 39 points, winning by 6 clear points from her nearest rival Flora Hadley of Bishop’s Stortford on 33 points.

Both events play for a scratch prize, using a best stableford score off scratch format. In the Boys event it was another win for Knebworth with Callum McCarthy returning a best of the day round of +1 or 35 points off scratch. In the Girls event, current County Champion Tala Clarke of Knebworth took the honours with 26 points on the day.

But the main event on this day is the Junior Champion Club event, with the main prize for the winners being qualification to represent Hertfordshire at the England Golf Junior Champion Club final event, played at Woodhall Spa later in the year.

Despite Knebworth dominating the individual prizes on the day, it was the team of East Herts A of Marcus Karim, Alfie Moy and Brandon Ward who clinched the title with a score of 79 points, using the best 2 from 3 format, with Marcus’s score of 40 and Alfie’s score 39 combined. This would be good enough by the margin of 2 points from the Knebworth A team of Aaron Gould, Callum McCarthy and Kobie Richmond. East Herts B took 3rd place on 70 points and were represented by Daniel Head, Jack Wentworth and Ava Gadsby.

Our thanks go to Harpenden Common GC for hosting us on the day and we wish our representatives from East Herts the best of luck at the Final event.
