Jamie Jackson of Knebworth GC – Herts Salver winner 2024

15 year old Jackson shoots 71 (-1) to win Salver event & a card countback on 76 (+4) provides the qualfying mark for the County Championship.

The pre qualifying event for our Men’s County Championship took place last Sunday (5th May), on a rarity for recent times of being a bright and mild day of weather conditions at West Herts GC.

The event has since its inception in the 1970’s been sponsored and supported by the Society of Hertfordshire Golf Captains and the event has the familiar tradition of always being held at the home club of the current Captain of the Society. This year the honour was bestowed to Gary Rees and as such the event was played at his club of West Herts GC.

Despite the recent awful weather conditions, the course was turned out exceedingly well, with presentation on the day excellent and the greens very smooth and consistent.

As previously stated the competitors enjoyed an excellent mornings golf with bright sunshine and mild temperatures, with even some sightings of shorts amongst the players and supporters!

The top 17 scores on the day qualified through to the Men’s County Championship event, starting on Friday 31st May, played this year at Welwyn Garden City GC. This mark fell on 76 (+4), with the qualifying places ultimately decided on a card countback.

The best score on the day was returned by 15 year old Jamie Jackson of Knebworth with a superb round of 71 (-1), to take the title by a single shot from a pack of 4 players on level par 72. Tom Turner of Harpenden Common’s back 9 of 35 was good enough to clinch 2nd place, and Paul Jones of Stevenage’s back 9 of 37 saw him make 3rd place on the day.

Our thanks to West Herts GC for allowing us use of their course and facilities on the day and to the ongoing support of the Society of Hertfordshire Golf Captains.
