Anderson & Williams both make cut at English Amateur Championship

Tomasz Anderson of Brocket Hall and the current HGU County Champion George Williams of Knebworth both made the top 64 out of the 288 strong field in the English Amateur Championship at Saunton GC, North Devon this week (July 28/29).

Both finished in an impressive tie for 12th position after 36 holes of strokeplay on the East & West courses at the famous links venue, considered one of the toughest tests in the UK.

George had an impressive 69 (-2) on the longer East course, added to a 73 (+2) on the shorter West course. Tomasz had the opposite scores, 69 on the West and 73 on the East. Both finished on a total of 142 (level), 5 behind the strokeplay winner Ryan Evans of Wellingborough on 137 (-5).

Both George and Tomasz are looking to emulate Callum Shinkwin of Moor Park who won the event last year at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire, defeating the then World 1 amateur Matt Fitzpatrick in the final.

George takes on Thomas Neve of the RAC Club on Wednesday morning (July 30), while Tomasz takes on Jamie Mist of Hayling GC.

UPDATE – Thur 31 July. Unfortunately both George and Tomasz fell at the first hurdle, both losing their 1st round matches on Wednesday. George lost by the narrowest of margins, on the 18th hole, 1 down to Thomas Neve, while Tomasz was defeated by Jamie Mist by 3 &1, thereby ending any hopes of a Hertfordshire repeat win of last year.
