MEN'S CHAMPION CLUB WINNERS 2023 LETCHWORTH GC, FROM L TO R, ROB HOLDEN, LAURIE OWEN & NIALL JOHNSTON
Our first 36 hole major competition of the County season took place last Sunday (14th May) with the playing of our Men's Champion Club Final event, kindly hosted for the first ever time in their history by Brickendon Grange Golf Club.
The event is a 36 hole strokeplay medal scratch competition with each club represented by 3 players, with all 6 rounds counting and the lowest aggregate score for the team winning the title.
We were blessed with a glorious Spring day with the first sighting this year of golfers in shorts! Bright, mild and light winds were the order of the day, although all the recent wet weather meant the course was playing its full length and the rough areas were extemely penal, thick and lush. Controlled and precise golf was required for good scoring.
After the morning round the host club led the way on 220 gross score, +7 as a team, helped by a best of the morning score of 70 (-1) by Bradley Robinson. Brickedon would lead by 5 shots from nearest rivals Letchworth and Bishop's Stortford.
In the afternoon round the scores in general improved, in part with the course and particuar parts of the rough now drying out and more practice and knowledge of the course from some of the competitors. Best of the day gross 69's (-2) were returned by both Rob Holden of Letchworth and current Men's County Champion holder Max Hopkins of Bishop's Stortford. Rob's score along with steady rounds from teammates the always consistant Niall Johnston and after only recently making his return to the amatuer ranks, former Men's County Champion Laurie Owen, allowed Letchworth to creep past the home club to take the title with a aggregate gross score of 442 for the day, +16, winning the title by 6 shots from the hosts on 448 +22. Stocks took 3rd place on 451 (+25).
Letchworth will now proceed to the National Champion Club Final to represent Hertfordshire, which is being played at Ealing Golf Club in West London at the end of September. We wish Letchworth all the best for the big event.
We thank Brickendon Grange for all of their efforts in hosting the event for us, in particurlar their greens staff who worked extemely hard in testing circusmstances leading up to the event.
The 2024 Men's Champion Club Final will be held at South Herts GC as part of their 125th celebrations.
