Women and Girls Trailblazers Award 2023

On March 2nd 2023, Rowena Hemmings (Director of Golf Development) and Matt Crowhurst (County Development officer) represented Hertfordshire Golf at the 2023 England Golf Awards as one of the final four nominees in the Women & Girls Trailblazers’ category. The Girlguiding Project, has been a few years in the making and was launched in 2022, The project has gone from strength to strength with dozens of girls attending golf courses around the county to obtain their Girls Golf Challenge Badge.

Due to Covid-19 this was the first time since 2019 that the awards had been hosted in person and it was great to have everyone back together celebrating the fantastic achievements of counties and clubs.

As well as Hertfordshire Golf being nominated for an award, Letchworth Golf Club also attended the awards ceremony as they too made the final four in the ‘Golf Club of the Year’ category. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out on 1st place but it’s clear to see why Letchworth Golf Club made it to the final when you see the hard work and enthusiasm of their General Manager, Jim Abraham and the Golf Operations Manager (& past Hertfordshire CDO), Esther Strous.

We wish Letchworth the very best of luck and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that next year they will come home with a well-deserved trophy in their category.

It was a real honour for me to be a part of the Hertfordshire Golf team that won this coveted award in the category ‘Women & Girls Trailblazers’. A lot of hard work went in to making the Girlguiding project a success and being recognised by England Golf was unbelievable.

The credit must go to the hard and tireless work of Rowena and her team who make sure these projects are given the attention and dedication they need to become successful.

Our thanks to Esther Strous, who played a vital part in the early days of the project and a very big thank you to Nicola Day, who was key in linking up Girlguiding and Hertfordshire Golf.
