Report from Boys U14 Manager Graham Oram;

Unfortunately, last Sunday (11 Sep) was not the day when Hertfordshire Under 14’s were to become, for the first time, Champions of the South East Region.

Three counties participated in this year’s final held at the Bedfordshire Golf Club. They were Middlesex, who topped the Central Group made up of themselves, Bedfordshire & Norfolk; Surrey, the reigning champions, who were in the South Group with Sussex, Hampshire & BB&O; and Hertfordshire, who had overcome Kent & Essex in the East Group.

10 a side 3 ball match play was the format for the final. Hertfordshire comfortably defeated Middlesex 9-1, whilst Surrey overcame the same opposition with an equally impressive 8-2 score line.

Unfortunately, Hertfordshire were unable to get the upper hand over Surrey and were to lose 7 ½ - 2 ½. That score line does not tell the full story with six of the defeated matches reaching as far as penultimate green with one going down the 18th.

Defeat is never easy to accept, but the boys in the under 14’s squad can take many positives from their season. They have all improved massively since they gathered together last year and lots of credit for this must go to the coaching staff lead by Ian Parker and assisted by Ian Taylor, Glenn Gardiner and Barney Puttick. On the course their behaviour has been impeccable, and off the course they have enjoyed many moments of fun and laughter which is such a vital ingredient in any development group.

Over the coming years many, if not all, will progress up the county ladder and play at under 16’s and under 18’s level and I am sure, in years to come, some will play for the men’s county team. On the way there will be many individual success stories.

Good luck boys. Work hard and continue to enjoy your golf.
