Report from Men's 1st Team Manager Jim Abraham;
SOUTH EAST (NORTH) LEAGUE MATCH – SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER 2022
HERTFORDSHIRE MENS 1ST TEAM - HOME MATCH V BEDFORDSHIRE
The Hertfordshire Men’s 1st Team finished the 2022 league campaign with a home victory against near neighbors Bedfordshire on Sunday 11th September 2022. This was a third successive win that secured 2nd place in the South East (North) league, behind winners Essex.
Letchworth Golf Club was again the venue with recent rainfall returning colour to the course following the recent drought conditions. With an early mist eventually clearing and blue skies returning, the early tricky conditions were replaced by favorable ones by mid-morning.
Niall Johnston & Luke Colgate led the team out in the first foursomes match which was competitive until the final holes. The home side eventually secured the first point of the day by 2&1.
After missing the away match against Middx in August, team captain Joss Gosling returned to the side and partnered Phil Dormer in match 2. The pair were never behind in their match and secured a victory by 4&2 as Hertfordshire made an impressive start to the day.
The outcome of match 3 was difficult to predict and remained a close affair throughout. Bedfordshire held a 1-up advantage playing the long par 4 18th but the Hertfordshire/Hadley Wood pairing of Sam Caney & David Jackson held their nerve to make a solid par which was enough to halve the match.
George Ackerman partnered debutant Jamie Plews in the final match of the morning and stretched away from their opponents on the back 9. The result was a 4&3 win to leave the home side with a strong advantage of 3.5 – 0.5 at lunch.
Luke Colgate was chosen to lead off the afternoon singles matches and it proved to be a wise decision as he played some immaculate golf. Scoring 5-under par was enough for an early afternoon spent supporting his teammates as he dominated a match that finished 8 & 6.
The next 2 matches saw Bedfordshire threatening a comeback as Phil Dormer lost 3 &1, and Niall Johnston narrowing missing out on a half point, losing 1 down on the 18th.
Parity was restored in the middle order with 3 successive points for Hertfordshire. In match 4, Jamie Plews gave himself a 100% record on his first appearance and completed an impressive day by winning 3 &2. Captain Joss continued the fine play, winning match by 5 &4, with Sam Caney continuing the winning streak by triumphing 3 & 1 in match 6. Sam’s victory included a wonderful eagle on the par 5 12th where he followed an excellent approach shot from his opponent, by sending his own to 10ft and holing out for a 3.
The penultimate match went the way of the visiting side as Phil Dormer went down 3 & 1. David Jackson followed up his morning’s half point with a strong display which included an eagle 2 on the opening hole, to win the day’s final point with a 5 & 3 victory.
So, another league season comes to an end with a fine 2nd place finish. Well played to all squad members and our congratulations are sent to league winners Essex.
