HERTS MEN'S SENIORS TEAM PICTURED AT ORSETT, FROM L TO R, JOHN AMBRIDGE, MITCHELL STEEL, JASON COURT, RUSSELL CONWAY-LYE, MARK GERSHINSON, KEN WHITTON, MIKE READY, BOB PEACOCK, TYE CARTER & DAVID LANG
Match report –Essex Seniors v Herts Seniors by Seniors Captain Simon Kay
Our first match of the season was going to be a tough challenge, especially with it coming so early in the season and, based on last season, Essex are a tough team to beat, especially away. The match was played at Orsett GC which despite being firm played very well and is a good challenge at any time. Team selection had been very difficult as we have such a large squad and there are as many disappointed squad members not playing as there were playing. In the end the team selected once again proved too strong for the opposition with a 7-3 win.
We had narrow losses in our first two matches, but then wins from our serial winner Mike Ready and John Ambridge squared the match. Then our middle and back order came into action winning 5 of the next 6 matches. All of these wins were close matches for Russell Conway-Lye, Tye Carter and Ken Whitton. Mitchell Steel won in the 'country'. However, the game that turned things round completely was the 7th match of David Lang. 2 down coming into the closing holes but winning his match on the 18th.
A great team performance.
Its only our first match but is a major start in our conquest to win the South East Group League. Our next match is at home at South Herts to BB&O, who are always a major challenge.
