After a two-year break, the 28th April 2022 saw 54 pairs from all over the East Region travel to Ipswich Golf Club (Purdis Heath), to compete in the East Region Foursomes trophy. A well-known, Championship venue and heathland course filled with the challenges of heather and bunkers strategically placed on the fairways.
In 2019 it was the pair from Welwyn Garden City Golf Club, Kelly Cooke and Esther Strous, who took the honours and won the title at Three Rivers, Essex. This year, five pairs from Hertfordshire made their way to Suffolk for the 36-Hole event including the defending champions. A brilliant representation of the county!
At lunch it was Kelly and Esther who were the highest Herts pair with a gross score of 80 which put them in a tie for third, four shots behind the leaders. With temperatures not getting any warmer and the wind picking up for the afternoon, it was going to be a great challenge. It was a solid afternoon round by the pair, especially finishing with an eagle on the 18th hole, that saw a gross 74 (1 over) returned to make their total for the tournament 154. The waiting game began to see if the morning leaders would manage the same or better.
With all the scores in it was a successful defence by Kelly and Esther who retained their title as East Region Foursomes Champions. Congratulations Kelly and Esther!
The 2023 event is due to be hosted by Bedfordshire. Course and details TBC.
