Boys Under 16 Champion 2021: Archie Mathers of Harpenden Common

BOYS UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS 2021, FROM L TO R, GEORGE ABBOTT, DYLAN BROCKHURST, ARCHIE MATHERS, KESIR SANGHA & PATRICK DONOVAN

The penultimate event of the County season was played yesterday (Thu 28 Oct) with the Boys Under 16 Championship, kindly hosted this year by Dyrham Park Country Club, located in between Borehamwood and Barnet, not far from the the M25/A1 interchange,

55 junior boys took part this year from Clubs all over the County, with handicaps ranging from +2 up to 22.

The recent wet weather meant the course was playing very long on the day with virtually no run on the ball of the tee to be gained, therefore providing a stern test for all the competitors over the 6497 yard par 72 course, but in particular the younger, generally shorter hitting players in the field.

The weather on the day was thankfully dry but with very gusty winds making decision making and good striking key to achieving good scores.

Ultimately there would be a 3 way tie for the lowest gross score returned on 76 (+4), achieved by George Abbott of Knebworth, Ben Sessions of Bishop's Stortford and Archie Mathers of Harpenden Common. A sudden death play off would be utilised to determine the overall winner of the event over holes 1, 17 and 18 and loops thereof, if required. The difficult 439 yard par 4 was bogeyed by all three players, so all progressed onto the 17th for the 2nd extra hole. Here, Ben Sessions, who earlier in the year won the Boys U14 title, would bow out after making a bogey on the uphill 361 yard par 4 17th hole, leaving George and Archie, who both achieved par 4's on the hole, in a head to head situation up the 18th hole . On the 3rd extra hole, the 394 yard uphill par 4 18th, George missed the green with his 2nd shot whearas Archie was on the right fringe of the tricky 2 tier 18th green, but crucially was hole high. Archie putted up well from 20+ feet to tap in range for his par 4. George sadly couldnt get up and down for his par to extend the play off and his 8 foot putt on the last green lipped out resulting in the win and the spoils on this occasion to Archie.

In the Handicap competition, Dylan Brockhurst of Chesfield Downs won the trophy with a nett 72 (level) on the day on a back 9 countback from Thomas Ashton of Little Hay, James Pett of Mill Green and Antoni Hawkins of Sandy Lodge, who all finished on the same score.

Our huge thanks as always to Dyrham Park for hosting the event and allowing us access to their course and facilities on the day.

Next year's event is on Thursday 27th October and will be hosted by Chesfield Downs G&CC.
