Harpenden Common Golf Club were crowned the Division 1 Champions of the Hertfordshire Men’s Scratch Team League last weekend. The title was secured at Berkhamsted GC on Saturday 23/10, when the HCGC team beat Berkhamsted GC team by a narrow margin of 7 – 5. The win pushed Knebworth GC and Hadley Wood GC into 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.
Following the 2 -2 result from the morning foursome’s session, the singles were closely fought with two halved matches securing two vital half points to give HCGC the win.
The Scratch Team League is the county premier team golf competition, held every year and it is the third Division 1 win for HCGC in the last 10 years.
The win was very special as it was the last match for Captain/Team Manager Alex Turner, who after an incredible 14 years at the helm has decided to retire from the position. Alex struggled to comment as he was overcome with emotion, but he did express his gratitude for the huge commitment that every player had shown and he thanked all those players present on the day plus all the players who played in the other matches.
Harpenden Common Golf Club is very proud of the achievement as the win demonstrated amazing strength in depth that is required to have a strong team for every match against the top golf clubs in the county.
