STEVE ENSOR OF HARTSBOURNE COUNTRY CLUB - MEN'S SENIOR CHALLENGE TROPHY WINNER 2021
Our annual Men's Senior Challenge Trophy event took place last Thursday (Oct 30) at the rolling parkland course at Hartsbourne Country Club in Bushey Heath, after an abeyance of 2 years due to not being played in 2020 due to COVID-19 calandar constraints.
The journey to the course on the morning for many of the competitors was problematic to say the least, compounded by the recent fuel crisis causing blockages in and around many of the petrol stations that still had some fuel to sell. Thankfully all of 63 competitors confirmed to play made it to Hartsbourne without causing major distruption to the planned draw sheet.
Overnight and recent rainfall meant the course played very long on the day with little to no run, but despite this the greens were prepared beautifully and provided a real challenge being very fast and smooth.
The winning score on the day was returned by Hartsbourne member Steve Ensor with 36 points off his Playing Handicap on the day of 21. Interestingly the Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) on the day was +3, the first time this has happened at a Hertfordshire Golf event since the introduction of WHS last November. The runner up was David Foster of Verulam with a steady 33 points off a Playing Handicap of 9. The log jam of 5 golfers on 32 points was broken with a best back 9 of 16 points achieved by 7 handicap David Bennett of East Herts, good enough for 3rd place on the day.
In the age catagory prizes. Stuart Platts of Moor Park won the 65 to 74 age group with 31 points and in the 75+ age group, former Senior Challenge winner Mick Kavanagh of Batchworth Park won the prize with 25 points.
Hartsbourne were superb hosts on the day and put on a stunning buffet lunch, much enjoyed by all the competitors and officials after play!
Next year's event will be at Mill Green GC on Thursday 29th September.
