Men's 1st Team narrowly lose season opener to BB&O

MEN'S 1ST TEAM v BB&O, FROM L TO R, MAX HOPKINS, JACK BIGHAM, MATT SMITH, JOSS GOSLING, TONY WILKINS (CAPTAIN), ALEX COLLMAN, PHIL DORMER & LUKE COLGATE

The Hertfordshire Men’s First Team started their much anticipated 2021 league campaign against a strong BB&O team on Sunday 9th May 2021.

The blustery conditions at Letchworth meant that scoring was at times difficult, but as always there was plenty of quality golf on display. With BB&O just beating the home side to the title in the last match of 2019, there was added incentive for both sides to get off to a winning start, and a close match was inevitable.

With the match reduced to 8 singles, Hertfordshire gave debuts to both Jack Bigham and Max Hopkins with both producing golf that meant their selection was fully warranted.  Jack was the day’s standout performer in match 2 with a comprehensive 6&5 victory.  In game 4, Max comfortably reached the 288-yard par 4 opener with a fine 3 wood, but the successful eagle putt was remarkably matched by his opponent as the first hole was halved in 2.  The match continued to be close and although Max made another eagle on the par 5 12th it wasn’t quite enough, and the match was lost 1 down.

Matches 1 & 3 saw a point apiece for both teams. Although leading after 7 holes, Phil Dormer eventually lost out 4&2 to a very talented Olly Huggins. Team Captain Tony Wilkins was always ahead in his match and saw out a comfortable 6&4 victory to leave both sides equal on 2 points after 4 matches.

The remaining 4 matches were all extremely close with none of them having a greater winning margin of 1 up at the finish. Unfortunately, it was BB&O that edged the points and ultimately the match with an overall winning score of 4 ½ - 3 ½.

So the opening match resulted in a narrow defeat for Hertfordshire, but with slight bias, it really was a contest that either side could have won.  Great credit must be given to BB&O and we wish them well for the rest of the season.
