BERKHAMSTED GC - MEN'S SENIOR CHAMPION CLUB WINNERS 2021 - KEVIN RATCLIFFE (L) & PETER YORK (R) (NOT PICTURED GORDON STEWART)
Berkhamsted GC won the Men's Senior Champion Club title for the 1st time yesterday (Tue May 11), when the team of Kevin Ratcliffe, Gordon Stewart and Peter York claimed victory by 3 shots from their nearest rivals Brookmans Park. The event has been dominated since its inception in 2007 by Moor Park GC, who have won the team trophy an impressive 8 times, but this year featured outside the top 3.
Aldenham G&CC were the hosts this year and the demanding tree lined par 70 course provided an excellent challenge with many of the competitors noting just how much the course has matured in recent years. The conditions on the day were also challenging with a blustery wind to content with and a couple of heavy downpours during play.
A full field of 72 players making up 24 teams took part, although sadly one player arrived late after traffic issues resulting in his team being disqualified.
Berkhamsted's winning cumulative team score (all 3 gross scores to count) was 231 (+21) with Ratcliffe with a 76 (+6), Stewart with 77 (+7) and York with 78 (+8).
Despite the challenges the ever consistent Phil Embleton of Brookmans Park posted the best round of the day with an impressive gross 71 (+1). Brookmans Park's total score was 3 behind Berkhamsted on 234 (+24), with Embleton joined by Gary Higgins (85) and Iain Simpson (78).
The home club Aldenham finished in a highly creditable 3rd position with steady scores achieved by all of their team, Benny Higham, James Paul and Barry Stratfull.
Our thanks to Aldenham G&CC for hosting the event and allowing us access to the course and facility for the day.
