SOPHIA FULLBROOK OF THE MELBOURNE CLUB - GIRLS AUTUMN CUP WINNER 2020 (BEST STABLEFORD HANDICAP SCORE)
On a thoroughly wet and blustery day last Thursday (29th November), our much curtailed 2020 season finally came to an end with the playing of our Girls Autumn Meeting and the Boys Under 16 Championships at Hadley Wood Golf Club.
20 Girls and 50 Boys completed 18 holes in truly miserable conditions for most of it with the Girls playing in a Stableford format and the Boys in a medal format.
Thankfully and with the assistance of the greenstaff 'squeegeing' the greens at times, the events were completed to a conclusion, although with the current restrictions on clubhouse use and gatherings in a 'Tier 2' location (London Borough of Enfield in this case), none of the formalities were possible, including a post event prize giving.
Despite the recent incredibly wet weather the Hadley Wood course was presented beautifully with excellent definition and the playing areas remaining firm and playable throughout. A credit to the green staff for their work leading up to the event.
In the Girls event, the lowest players faired the best, perhaps aided by the wet conditions and lack of run. Both Sophia Fullbrook of The Melbourne Club and Anna Molloy of Sandy Lodge returned excellent scores in the circumstances of 37 points. Sophia would win the Autumn Handicap Cup for the best stableford score on a countback, but Anna would pick up the Barbara Quirk Shield for the best stableford gross score of 33 points against Sophia's 32. In 3rd place was Grace Cranston of Letchworth with 36 points from her handicap of 20, one point infront of 26 handicap Grace Maskell of Bishop's Stortford with 35 points, good enough for 4th place.
The CSS on the day (the last time we'll use this measure as we move into WHS as of November) was 74 against a par and SSS of 73.
Winter well, take care and we'll see you again in 2021.
