2020 MEN'S COUNTY SENIORS CHAMPION - MARK WILLIAMS OF KNEBWORTH
Mark Williams of Knebworth overcame a strong field and sweltering conditions at West Herts GC to claim the Men's County Seniors Championship title this week.
Mark returned excellent gross scores of 74 (+2) and 72 (level) for a total of 146 (+2) to take the Championship crown by a clear 4 shots from club mate Graham Willams (no relation!).
A full field of 72 senior golfers took part in the 2 day event played Monday (10th Aug) and Tuesday (11th Aug) this week, after receiving more than 90 applications to take part. A ballot on exact handicap was required and the qualifying mark fell at 6.6 with all those on handicaps of 6.6 and lower being sucessful and those over 6.6 making up a 20+ strong reserve list.
The West Herts course was presented suberbly for the event with the greens and surrounds in particular in tremendous condition. The recent hot and dry conditions rendered the fairways playing extremely firm and fast and potential distaster was only ever a wayward shot or bounce away!
The temperature gauge was steady at over 30C+ for both days which made playing and walking round a fairly uncomfortable endevour.
The leader at the halfway stage was 4 handicap Paul Mayles of Mid Herts with a excellent gross 73 (+1) by one shot from the eventual Champion and Matthew Cohen of South Herts both on 74 (+2).
The cut for Round 2 fell on 81 (+9) with 30 players returning scores of 81 or better in Monday's Round 1.
The overall runner-up Graham Williams finished his 2nd round in style with a tap-in eagle 3 on the par 5 18th after an incredible 2nd shot with narrowly missed the hole for the rarest bird of them all, the albatross. Graham shot 2 rounds of 75 (+3) for a total of 150 (+6).
3rd overall was Phil Embleton of Brookmans Park on 151 (+7) much assisted by a 2nd round of 73 (+1).
Bob Head of The Melbourne Club won the Trude Trophy for the best handicap score with 144 nett by 1 from Ian Foster of Bishop's Stortford.
Mike Slattery of Letchworth won the 65 and Over category with gross scores of 78 (+6) and 76 (+4) for a total of 154 (+10).
The Day Scratch prizes were won by the aformentioned Paul Mayles on Day 1 with a 73 (+1) and by Warwick Grant of Moor Park on Day 2 with a best of the Championship score of 71 (-1), the only red figure score recorded.
The CSS on Day 1 was 74 and on day 2 72 against a Par and SSS of 72.
Our thanks to West Herts for hosting the event in these trying and difficult current circumstances and congratulations to all the competitors who completed their rounds considering the oppressive heat!
The 2021 event will be held at Batchworth Park GC on the outskirts of Rickmansworth on the Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th August.
