KELLY HUTCHERSON OF WELWYN GARDEN CITY - LADIES' CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS 2019
The Ladies' Champion of Champions event was played yesterday (Sunday 6th October) at the picturesque Welwyn Garden City GC with 18 lady club champions from around the county taking part.
This year's event reflected the fact that a date change from an April event in 2018 to an October event in 2019, meant that we allowed winners of both or either 2018 and/or 2019 were permitted to play and represent their club.
Torrential rain overnight and at first light meant that several greens and bunkers were flooded but thankfully conditions dramatically improved, the course dried out nicely aided by a stiff breeze and the event was played to a conclusion with no delays or interruptions.
The first game out on the course saw the event favourites scratch handicap Kelly Hutcherson on her home course and Jackie Foster of Bishop's Stortford fresh from her performances for England in the Senior Home International matches played in Ireland.
Kelly would return a highly impressive round of 69 (-3) gross to take the scratch title by 5 shots after playing partner Jackie shot a round of 74 (+2).
Jackie did have the consolation of taking the Handicap prize for the best nett score (discounting Kelly's nett 69 due to the 'one prize rule').
Conditions under foot made the course play long and difficult and most of the field struggled, leading to the CSS going up to 75 and reductions only on the day.
Kelly's round also has the added benefit of getting her handicap cut from scratch to +1 with a 0.6 decrease on the day. Well done Kelly!
Our thanks to Welwyn Garden City GC for hosting the event this year and their efforts in preparing the course in difficult conditions experienced that morning.
Next year's event will be held on the High Course at Moor Park GC and will retain its late season date on the afternoon of Sunday 4th October 2020, but only 2020 winners (or runners up if the winners are unavailable) will be eligible.
