HERTS BOYS UNDER 18 TEAM PICTURED AT BATCHWORTH PARK, FROM L TO R, ZACH LITTLE, LEWIS SLADE, SAM CANEY, MATTHEW GAUNTLETT, GEORGE DURKAN, REIS SUART, MAX HOPKINS & GEORGE WRIGHT
Report from Boys U18's Manager Chris James;
The County Boys under 18 team took maximum points from their final round robin league fixture when they hosted BB&O and Middlesex boys at Batchworth Park on the official first day of autumn on Sunday last (1st September).
With the unbeaten BB&O team leading the league only a double win for Hertfordshire would give the county boys equal match points, leaving the eventual winners going to the league final to be decided on game points difference.
In the end it was an emphatic wins over both visitors that proved decisive. All games were hard fought on a firm and fast course with tough pin positions and a challenging wind to give the players plenty to think about.
Five boys secured maximum points including England Internationals Max Hopkins and Reis Suart. West Herts duo of Matthew Gauntlett and Club Champion Zach Little were equally impressive as was the tenacious George Wright from Bishops Stortford. County Boys Champion George Durkan defeated his Middlesex opponent, as did Sam Caney of Hadley Wood. Anchor man and late replacement, Lewis Slade, provided the icing on the cake with a fine 2&1 win over his BB&O opponent parring his way in once he got his nose in front by winning the long par 3 - 15th hole, which proved a tough challenge with a sucker pin position.
Several games went to the 18th green but Hertfordshire prevailed in them all and the final score was a victory over BB&O by 6 games to 2 and over Middlesex by 7 games to 1. BB&O beat Middlesex by 5 games to 3.
The South Eastern Group Final is against the other two zone league winners, Bedfordshire and Surrey at Gerrards Cross Golf Club on Sunday 22nd September.
