THE WINNING OLD FOLD MANOR TEAM FROM L TO R OF RICHARD ZELLI (CLUB VICE CAPTAIN), DIANE MERRILL (LADIES' VICE CAPTAIN), IAN HUCKLE (CLUB CHAIRMAN) AND ALASTAIR FRASER (GOLF COMMITTEE), FLANKED BY COUNTY PRESIDENT HUGH WIKNER ON THE FAR RIGHT AND COUNTY SECRETARY LOUIS MATAMALA ON THE FAR LEFT
16 teams of four players from around the County took part yesterday (Wed 28 Aug) in a new event for Hertfordshire Golf, our Club Officials Competition, kindly hosted by Old Fold Manor Golf Club.
This event was born out of the old 'Captain/Secretary Meeting' which has been a staple of the HGU calendar events for sometime but was considered in need of an update. The new event is now a team of 4 from the same club, playing a best 2 from 4 stableford format, with the teams comprising of any notable figures/roles at the clubs and of any gender.
The weather on arrival first thing was rather overcast with even some drizzle thrown in, but thankfully this improved to be a splendid day for golf, warm and sunny but not as oppressively hot as the recent Bank Holiday weekend.
The course was presented well and as always at Old Fold, the greens were running smooth and true and provide the real challenge of the course.
The home advantage was obviously key as the home team were triumphant with an excellent team score of 88 points, winning by a clear 5 point margin from 2nd place Hadley Wood on 83 points, with Mid Herts in 3rd a further point behind on 82 points.
The nearest the pin winners were Welwyn Garden City General Manager David Spring on the 7th (almost a very costly hole in one!) and the Hertfordshire Golf Player Development Director Julie Nedza on the 14th.
A good day was had by seemingly all and the new format proved to be popular and will likely be repeated for the 2020 season.
