HERTS BOYS TEAM PICTURED AT ORSETT GC, FROM L TO R, MATTHEW GAUNTLETT (NON PLAYING RESERVE), JACK BIGHAM, GEORGE DURKAN (NON PLAYING RESERVE), DOMINIC CLEMONS, REIS SUART, BEN PIERLEONI, MAX HOPKINS & GEORGE WRIGHT.
The Herts Boys team finished in a disappointing 6th position out of 11 counties at the recent South East Group Boys Qualifier played at Orsett Golf Club in Essex this week (Weds 3rd July).
The squad of 8 who traveled down to Essex for the event were particularly strong on paper this year and hopes were high of a good performance.
After the morning 18 holes Herts were in 3rd position with a cumulative score of 370 (+10) with the 5 best gross scores used and the worst discarded. This was to be 9 shots behind leaders Kent on 361 (+1) and 7 shots behind 2nd place Surrey on 363 (+3). So all to play for.
However the Herts team slumped to an afternoon score of 387 (+27), which was the joint worst score of the afternoon session.
Kent ended up as run away winners as they added an afternoon total of 359 (-1) for a very impressive final team score of 720 (level) for the day. Even more impressive was the fact that the same 5 Kent boys scores were used for both rounds.
Herts finished on a score of 757 (+37) for the day, only good enough for 6th position.
Best Herts player on the day was Jack Bigham of Harpenden with scores of 69 (-3) and 79 (+7) for a total of 148 (+4) and 23rd position on the individual leaderboard.
The good news is that all of the 8 boys who traveled, are eligible to play in the 2020 event in Kent, so hopefully this will be an experience that will stand us in good stead for next years event.
