HERTS MEN'S SENIORS TEAM - BACK ROW FROM L TO R, WARWICK GRANT, NICK DRAPER, STEPHEN DAWSON, PHIL EMBLETON, MIKE READY, TYE CARTER & BOB PEACOCK, FRONT ROW GORDON STEWART, IAN FOSTER & GAIUS POTTON
Following the 8-2 victory at home to Middlesex earlier in the month, the Hertfordshire Men's Seniors team travelled to the Bedfordshire Golf Club last Friday (24th May) to play Beds in the 2nd South East Group League match of the season with high expectations.
However Beds with a number of newly qualified seniors were also very hopeful.
On a bright sunny day with a bit of wind the course was firm with fast greens, but overall very good conditions for golf.
At the turn whilst all the matches were quite close, Bedfordshire had the edge up in 6 of them, and continued to hold a slight advantage until late in the round.
However Phil Embleton in the top match turned around his result by winning the 16th and 18th to win 1 up, this was followed up by Gordon Stewart winning 3/2, Tye Carter lost in a close match, but Mike Ready followed up with a solid 3/2 victory to give us a 3/1 lead.
Behind a number of matches were in the balance with Warwick Grant down Steve Dawson all square, Gaius Potton and Bob Peacock down, but Nick Draper and Ian Foster both up.
We therefore needed Nick and Ian to win which they duly completed with minimal fuss giving us 5 points, and therefore a half was required for the win from either Warwick, Steve or Gaius, which despite some good golf sadly eluded us.
Actually not a bad result against a much improved Bedfordshire side, but means if we beat both Essex and BB&O later in the year we would still win the league and progress to the Final. All to play for!
