Junior Girls Return to Golf

My name is Maddie Rolph and I am very pleased to be appointed the Hertfordshire Girls County Captain for 2021.

I have been playing golf since I was 7 years old and am still aspiring to be the best I can possibly be and to fulfil my dream of being a professional golfer on the LPGA. I am driven, competitive, determined and am a team player. I have been part of the Hertfordshire County U18 Squad for 6 years and was a member of the winning team at Wensum Valley when we won the East Region County Match Days in 2019.

During this time, I have won numerous competitions and trophies and was the East Region Girls Champion in 2019.

I am currently studying at The Golf College in Sussex where I play golf on a daily basis, also travelling to Portugal for 3 months over the winter season. I am studying a Btec in sport science.

This August I will be flying out to America on a scholarship to Western Texas College to carry on my education and develop my golf.

My name is Anna Molloy and I am pleased to be appointed Herts U18 Girls Vice-Captain for 2021. I began playing golf about five years ago when I got my first set of golf clubs for my 12th birthday. I have worked hard on my game since then to get where I am today and I have made some unforgettable memories along the way, including competing alongside my amazing teammates. I was Hertfordshire Girls Champion in 2019 and also won the Girls Autumn meeting in 2020. I was honoured to be selected to join the Thames Valley England Regional Squad in 2019 and have been a member for the past two years and I feel my game has improved throughout this period. I currently have a WHS handicap of 1.2.

I look forward to continuing to improve my golf whilst studying in the states and hopefully eventually get a place on one of the university women's golf teams there. I hope my game will be the strongest it has ever been and give me the opportunity to play professionally if that is what I decide to do.

Our junior girls are back in action kicking the season off with the appointment of our 2021 Captain Maddie Rolph (Centurian) and Vice-Captain Anna Molloy (Sandy Lodge).

Following the disappointment of all competitions being cancelled in 2020 our main focus for 2021 will be to retain the success we had in 2019 winning the East Region National U18 Girls Championship, known at the County Match Days (CMD), and The East Region Team Trophy. This year’s East Region CMD will take place at The Bedfordshire Golf Club 9 -11th August 2021 and The Team Trophy at Porters Park Golf Club 19th September 2021.

Our return to golf started on Friday 9th April with a half day coaching session for our Development Squad at Chesfield Downs. We were blessed with warm sunshine and an eager group of juniors excited at being back on the course.

Under the guidance of Lead Coach Jo Oliver assisted by Emma Harris the focus of the day was distance control from 120 yards in.

The girls were introduced to the England Golf Record and Reflection Sheet (R&R) used to record various statistics to help them identify areas for improvement and reflect on how they did and what areas required improvement.

The day started with warm up sessions using the range and short game area before they were split into teams to play the Par 3 course. Each player recorded statistics for Greens in Regulation (GIR), no of putts and total score. During the round the coaches were on hand to discuss the importance of pre shot routine and knowing the yardage required.

Players completed the R&R based on their performance and identified two areas for their post play practice session, assisted by the coaches. The girls spent 30 mins focussed practice on each of their chosen areas.

The day finished with a team competition on putting from 8 foot and chipping to land within a 2-foot boxed area around the pin.

Needless to say, the teams were very competitive and the girls thoroughly enjoyed their first session back going home with lots of ideas and focus for the coming few weeks before their next session.

During this time the girls will use their R&Rs to record their performance during two competitions and these will be used at the next session in one-to-one discussions with the coaches.

Needless to say, I was on hand all day supporting the girls and coaches and providing the much-needed refreshments!
